A place to learn the Dharma together
The Buddhist Society of Australia is a volunteer-run charity in Sydney. We share the teachings of the Buddha through short introductions, articles and discussions, and we welcome people of every tradition and background, including those who are simply curious.
Our mission
The Buddhist Society of Australia aims to promote the teachings of Buddha, provide support for Buddhist practitioners, and contribute to the well-being of the community through charitable activities aligned with Buddhist values.

What we do
Teaching resources. Our Learn the basics page and our articles introduce the core teachings of the Buddha in plain words, with sources you can read for yourself.
Discussions. Our Discussions are a place to ask questions and talk about the teachings and practice with others.
Membership and volunteering. Anyone who supports our purposes can apply to become a member, and everything we do is run by volunteers.
In our first year we held meditation sessions and Dharma discussions at the University of Sydney and the University of Technology Sydney. We do not hold sessions at present. You can read about our first year in our News.
Who is welcome
Everyone. We are not tied to one school of Buddhism, so people from every Buddhist tradition are welcome, and so are people with no background in Buddhism at all. You do not need to be Buddhist to read, ask questions or join the discussions.
Who we are
We are a charity registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission, and everyone who helps run the Society is a volunteer. You can read more about the Society and its registration, or follow what we have been doing in our News.
If you have a question, send us a message and a volunteer will reply.
Not to do any evil;
to embrace the good;
to purify one’s mind:
this is the instruction of the Buddhas.
