I've been thinking about a very small practice: walking from one end of a quiet path to the other, then turning. Before each step, I recite a short refuge phrase, and I let the mind remember bodhicitta, the wish to be awake for the sake of all beings. The feet meet the ground; the breath is ordinary; the path is just a path.
I wonder whether a step can be plain and still meant for others. In Lamrim study, we are told to bring the path to life through the heart, not just through concepts. Ngöndro practice, the preliminary practice, has made me sense that devotion is not a performance; it can be a gentle direction, like a lamp pointing the way.
Can you share how you let a small practice keep its simplicity? Does a refuge phrase become a weight, or does it become a hand on the path?
