I’ve been thinking about loving-kindness between lectures. When I sit with the simple wish for myself and others to be at ease, the mind likes to turn it into a mark of progress: a warm feeling, a softer day, a little proof that practice is working. But the early texts seem to keep goodwill closer to a dwelling than a certificate. It can be plain, repeated, and unfinished.
I like that. It leaves room for days when the wish feels thin, mechanical, or only half present. It also keeps me from sorting people into “reached” and “not reached” by how much warmth I notice.
I’m curious where others draw the line between a cue and a score. Does loving-kindness stay open when it becomes a habit, and how do you stop a practice cue from becoming a little report card?
I’d love replies from people who see this differently, especially if you think the practice needs more structure, more feeling, or more trust in ordinary intention.
