Can dependent origination stay a question without becoming a chart?
The early suttas describe dependent origination as a pattern of conditions, not a fixed self moving from one box to the next. In SN 12.2, the Buddha explains the arising and ceasing of suffering through conditioned links, especially ignorance, volitional formations, and craving (https://suttacentral.net/sn12.2). I read this as teaching a process, not a diagram.
I hold literal rebirth across lifetimes, with continuity of consciousness and karma, while keeping the links dynamic rather than mechanical. But I wonder: can dependent origination remain a question for practice without becoming a map that labels every moment?
What draws you to the links? Do you see them as explaining rebirth, as a training focus, or as a description of mind in the present moment? I’d like to hear views that keep the teaching precise without turning it into a neat chart.
