At the kitchen table, I’ve been thinking about the word “Dharma friend” as a handrail, not a badge. If I call myself a practitioner, does it help me be gentler with the kids, my spouse, the dishes, the small returns to the breath? Or does it add a soft self-watch: Am I being a good one?
My current hunch is simple: a thin ethical story is enough. I don’t need a thick narrative of progress. I need the precepts, a short sit, and the willingness to notice when attention has wandered into fixing everyone.
I’m curious because I keep meeting two answers. One says kindness widens when the label fades, so the sitter stops checking for a softer self. The other says labels matter; they carry the teachings, community, and the Buddha’s encouragement when home life gets muddy.
Which side do you land on? Does a label become a badge, a handrail, or something else?
