Last week I lit a small candle before a two-minute sit at the kitchen table while my children were in the bath. My spouse called it “the family pause”. It helped, but I caught myself wanting the candle to prove I was doing enough.
In the suttas, the Buddha speaks of taking refuge as a turning of the heart, not a badge. I’m trying to keep ritual as a soft hinge — a way to bow, settle, and return — not a scoreboard for how good a parent I am.
Does anyone else use small household rituals that stay gentle without turning into evidence? What keeps a practice from becoming a test? I’d love answers from different views, especially if you think ritual is more central than I do.
