Can a bow stay a bow without a badge?
In the dojo we bow before sitting, after sitting, when we meet. Easy enough. Then the mind starts collecting: was it deep? sincere? enough? The bow turns into a report.
I like the bow when it is just a door: it gathers attention, softens the shoulders, reminds me I am not the whole place. If it becomes a certificate, it has quietly left the room.
I am not saying ritual is useless. I think it is close to the centre of the path; without form, practice can scatter. But form can also become a little trophy case.
Where does a bow stay a bow? At what point does it become a grade? Does the answer lie in intention, in the body, in the silence after, or in the willingness to bow badly?
I would like to hear from people who lean towards ritual, towards minimalism, towards the plainest possible practice. What keeps your bow from becoming a badge?
