I am doing the dishes after the little ones have finished their third round of “one more”. My spouse is reading at the table, the kettle is going, and for a second I remember to send a line of kindness to the person who just cut me off. It seems useful, then it seems like a mood, then it seems like a tiny bow inside the kitchen.
I am trying to keep metta small enough for a real day: one breath, one phrase, one return. But I wonder when a practice becomes a checklist. If I am only sending kindness because I planned to, is it still practice? If it starts to seem warm, is that enough?
I would love to hear from people who practise metta differently: as a formal sitting, as a short phrase, as a way of speaking to the kids, as a gentle reminder when the house is loud. What keeps it from becoming a performance for you?
