I have sat beside many people who light a lamp, bow, or recite refuge, then quietly wonder whether they are praying to an idea or returning to the teaching. For me, devotion is not a decoration. It is a way of letting the heart lean toward the Buddha, the Dhamma, and the Saṅgha before the mind gets busy.
When I set up the hall, the smell of wood, the sound of a bell, the simple act of kneeling can make practice feel less like a project and more like a doorway. If the cue hardens into proof—“I am sincere because I do this”—it can become a badge. If it stays soft, it can open attention.
I would love to hear how others handle this. Is ritual central to the path, or more optional? Can a small act of reverence stay useful without becoming a test? What sign tells you the practice is still open?
