Hi all. In my study group we talk about a small bow at the start of sitting — not a performance, just a cue that gathers the mind. In the Lamrim path, refuge (taking the Buddha, Dharma, Sangha as guide) is meant to quiet the pull toward fixing ourselves, and then bodhicitta (the wish for all beings to be well) widens the aim. I’m wondering whether a small bow can stay a doorway, not a badge, when no one sees and the body is tired.
I keep thinking of it as a hinge: the knees bend, the breath lengthens, and the intention turns toward kindness. It does not have to become a test of purity. If it becomes a badge, it starts grading the practitioner; if it stays a doorway, it simply opens the room for practice.
I’d love to hear from people who practice without much ritual, and from those who lean on devotion. What keeps a small gesture from becoming a rule, and what keeps it from becoming empty?
