Can a bell stay a cue, not a score?
In shikantaza — just sitting — the bell can be a thin doorway. It does not grade the sitting. It does not say the breath was good or bad. It only asks: is attention here again?
I sit with that question because a small cue can become a tally. One bell, one point. One bow, one mark. Then practice starts keeping count, and the form becomes a badge rather than a hand.
I am curious what keeps a ritual alive for you without turning it into a test. For me, the weight is in what care does next: a pause, a return, a plain act after the bell. Rebirth, for me, stays a wide horizon, not a case file to be checked.
If you have a short cue that stays soft, I’d like to hear it. If you think the cue should be stricter, say so too. Different views are useful here; they keep the question open.
