I've been sitting for a few months, mostly at a desk, and I keep circling one thing: if I don't fully accept rebirth, can I still practise loving-kindness in a way that is faithful to the early teachings? I read that metta is about opening up, not making a case for a future life. At the same time, some friends say that without rebirth the practice can drift into vague niceness. I'm not sure what that means.
I'd love to hear from people who see metta as:
- a training for the present moment
- a bridge toward a deeper view of self
- a practice that needs the wider Buddhist worldview to keep its shape
What would you tell a beginner who wants a simple daily routine, is not certain about rebirth, and still wants to take the teachings seriously? And if you do accept rebirth, how does that change the way you sit? I'm after honest answers, not polished ones.
