I’m the one who still counts breaths like a nervous office worker counting steps. I’ve been trying a tiny kitchen-table practice: sitting with a kettle, not grading the sitting, just letting the object land in the room.
Sometimes I add a short loving-kindness phrase, and it helps. Sometimes it starts sounding like a test: am I sincere enough? Is the phrase working? I don’t know.
If ritual and devotion are central, where do I put the phrase so it stays a doorway? If ritual is optional, can the kettle do the whole job? And if breath is the only cue, how do I set the phrase down without it feeling like failure?
I’d love replies from people who lean ritual-first, ritual-optional, or breath-only. I’m especially after plain words, not fancy terms. If you use a small object, a short phrase, or just the breath, what keeps it from becoming a score?
