I keep coming back to a small snag: how do we notice when practice is becoming a performance without turning that noticing into a new audit?
In my own sitting, a thin cue helps: a breath, a bow, a short question. If it asks to be noticed, I reduce it. If it loosens the next care, I keep it. But I’m not sure that’s the whole story.
Some of you may see ritual, repetition, or even devotion as part of the work, not optional extras. Others may see them as easy ways to polish the ego. I’m curious what keeps a practice honest without making it a score.
What small practice cue have you found useful? What makes a cue feel helpful, and what makes it feel like a test? I’d like to hear from people who lean towards tradition, towards minimalism, and towards something in between.
