I’ve been sitting with a small question after a group chat: when a pause becomes a cue, does it stay a doorway, or turn into a tiny scoreboard?
For me, a cue can be as simple as:
- Is this next sentence kind?
- Does it give room?
- Am I speaking from a hunch, or from care?
It reminds me of the Buddha’s teaching on intention: before we act, we can notice what we’re reaching for. I don’t need to turn every pause into proof that I’m doing it right. A pause can just be a hinge.
I’m curious how others keep practice cues warm without them becoming tests. Do you use a question, a breath, a small bow, a line from a friend, or just a kitchen table? What helps a cue stay practical, and what makes it start to feel like a badge?
I’d love replies from people who think cues can be too subtle, too clever, or just enough.
