Last night, between a spilled juice box and a very serious question about whether socks are shoes, I tried a small bow at the kitchen bench. Not a ceremony. Just a half-second turn: may I be kind. It worked, in the sense that my shoulders dropped and I looked at my child instead of the clock.
I keep wondering whether a household ritual can stay warm without becoming a test. If we bow before tea, before washing, before a short sit, does it become proof we are doing the path properly? Or can it stay a doorway, a gentle hinge that reminds us the practice is the person in front of us, not a record?
I am drawn to ritual as a way of taking the Dharma seriously, even in a messy home. But I also worry it can harden into a checklist. How do you keep a small practice from becoming a scoreboard?
