I’ve been trying to keep my practice small and devotional: a short bow, a breath, a few lines of loving-kindness. The last thing I want is a score, but I keep wondering where the line is between a helpful cue and a hidden audit.
For me, ritual matters. It gives the mind a place to land and a direction to turn, not just a technique to repeat. I’m not sure I can keep the point of the practice if I strip away the reverence, the ethics, and the sense of going to the Buddha’s teaching as a refuge.
At the same time, I’m wary of making a form into a shield. If the bow starts proving that I’m doing it right, it may have become a performance. So I’m asking: how do you keep a ritual alive without turning it into a test? Where do you go when a practice feels stiff? Do you look for a teacher, a friend, a group, or a simpler cue? I’d love to hear from people who see ritual differently, or who keep devotion quiet and practical.
