Hi all. When I sit and bow, I try not to make it a performance. For me, the bow is a small refuge: I turn toward the Three Jewels, let the mind settle, and then remember that the aim is not just my own calm, but waking care for others. In Lamrim terms, it is a doorway into bodhicitta: I am not only attending to my breath, I am letting the whole path gather in a simple gesture.
I wonder how you keep a small practice from becoming a test of self. If the bow points to the Buddha, the Dharma and the Saṅgha, does it stay open? If it points to how serious we are, does it tighten? I would love to hear from people who practice in monastic, lay, contemplative, or more secular ways. What helps you keep the gesture humble and alive?
