I’ve been sitting at my kitchen table for a few months now, and I’m still learning what counts as practice and what just becomes a habit. I’ve started with a tiny ritual before sitting: a slow breath, a short bow, and a line of loving-kindness toward the people I’ll meet that day. It feels useful, but I worry it can turn into performance.
I’m especially curious because I’ve never been to a temple, so I’m borrowing shapes from books and a few quiet moments at home. When I read the Buddha’s teaching about reverence and care, I get the sense that a small ritual can keep the cushion from feeling like a plain routine. But I also don’t want to add layers that make the sitting feel heavier.
How do you balance simplicity and shape? Does a brief ritual help a beginner stay warm, or does it risk becoming a test? I’d love to hear from people who sit plain and people who use more ritual.
