Hi all. I’ve been sitting with a simple question from Lamrim study: how can a beginner keep bodhicitta — the awakened heart — alive without turning it into a list of rules?
In my ngöndro practice, I try to begin each sitting by taking refuge in the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha, and by thinking of all beings as mothers. It sounds big, but I want it to stay small enough for an ordinary day: a cup of tea, a queue, a difficult message.
I’m curious how others keep compassion practical. Do you use a short phrase, a visualisation, or just a gentle check-in? Can bodhicitta be held lightly, like a lamp on a table, without becoming a performance?
I’d love replies from people who practise in different ways, including those who think formal ritual can feel too heavy, and those who find it a strong support.
