I’ve been trying to keep loving-kindness small enough to use in an office day. A brief bow, a hand over the chest, a quiet “may they be at ease” before replying to a difficult email. It helps, but then I start wondering: am I practising, or am I marking points?
I like the idea that a little ritual can be a doorway, not a badge. If the cue is too thin, the wish can vanish. If it is too thick, it can become a checklist. I’m trying to notice chest tightness, let it be there for one second, then let the breath open into care. The next ordinary action — a gentler sentence, a slower pour of tea — feels like the real test.
Where do you draw the line between a helpful cue and a score? Does a small ritual keep mettā moving, or does it start to collect itself? I’d love answers from people who see ritual as central, and from people who see it as a risk.
