I’ve been sitting at the kitchen table after the children finally stop asking for snacks, and I keep noticing how quickly loving-kindness can become a repair kit. I send warmth to a grumpy neighbour, to my spouse, to my own tired mind, and then I wonder: is that real practice, or just making things smoother?
In the early suttas, the Buddha seems to treat kindness as a way of softening the heart, not as a tool for controlling outcomes. That feels useful at home. I can wish my children well without needing them to be less fussy. I can notice my own irritation without turning it into a project.
The tricky bit is when kindness starts to feel like a fix. Then it can become another kind of holding on. I’m curious how people here tell the difference between ethical warmth and using metta to smooth over what is uncomfortable. Does the practice change when it stops needing to work?
