The kids are on one side of the kitchen table, one asks for toast, the other asks why the dog is sad. I make the toast. I let the dog be sad. Between the two I notice a pause. Not a retreat, not a cushion, just a small clear gap where I can breathe and choose the next word.
I find myself wondering whether a practice can live in those gaps without needing to be counted, named, or defended. If I notice kindness while stirring rice, is that enough? If I do not sit for days, has the path thinned? If I bow to a small bowl, am I being silly, or is the silliness useful?
I am not sure how much structure helps and how much it tightens. I would like to hear how others keep a practice small enough for a busy home and wide enough for the teaching. What does a practice look like when it is not a method?
