I keep coming back to a small practical question: when noticing becomes routine, how does it stay a skill rather than a neat habit?
For me, sati is trained attention to what is present, not a label for calm or a proof of progress. The Buddha’s teaching can be used as a map for attention, but I’m wary of letting it become a story that must be believed.
In daily life, I test this by asking: What is here now, before I tidy it up? That check can keep practice alive, but it can also turn into a private checklist if I’m not careful.
I’d value replies that disagree. If you see mindfulness as tied to belief, ritual, retreat, or a community context, say what you find. If you see it as a plain daily skill, say how you keep it from hardening. I’m looking for reasons, not reassurance.
