When I sit in zazen, seated meditation, the first move is not to fix the mind, but to let the body settle and the breath appear. In shikantaza, just sitting, there is no special object to chase; only sitting, hearing, and the slow return when attention wanders.
At the same time, I have watched practice become a neat little package: the posture, the pause, the quiet. That neatness can be helpful, but it can also close the door. If the path is really the Buddha’s teaching, it should stay open to those who walk with prayer, devotion, or a gentler kind of attention.
So I invite replies from different views: Does zazen need a clear method to stay faithful? Can a beginner sit without a map? Does the cushion teach less, more, or just itself?
No scores, no tests. Just what you notice when the sit becomes ordinary.
