I’ve been using a short loving-kindness pause between study blocks, and it works — until I start treating it like a repair kit. The mind says, “If I do this enough, the restlessness should tidy up,” and then the kindness becomes a to-do list.
I’m trying to keep it plain:
- begin with the breath
- let the wishes arise without chasing them
- notice when I’m grading the practice
What’s your way of keeping mettā gentle? Do you return to the body, a bell, walking, or simply letting the wish fade? I’d love replies from people who see it more as a training of warmth, and people who see it as a quiet act of repair.
