I’m still new to cushions, and lately I keep turning my kitchen pauses into tiny tests. I sit in the chair, take a breath, send a kind wish, then wonder if it was warm enough. If I count the wish, it starts to feel like a mark. If I don’t count it, I worry I’m just nodding at the air.
I like the idea that a small pause can be practice when it can be let go without a score. The chair, the breath, the wish, the next word. That sounds kind. But I’m not sure how to keep it from tightening into a scoreboard.
How do you hold a daily pause so it stays a practice and not a performance? I’d love to hear views that differ from mine, especially if you think some counting or checking is helpful, not just a trap.
