Hi all.
Before sitting, I sometimes write a short note on the cushion: sati (mindfulness), mettā (loving-kindness), just this breath. It helps me settle.
Then I notice the note can start to teach. It points, judges, or promises a better result. The sitting becomes about keeping the note, not staying with what is here.
The Buddha taught attention as a friend, not a manager. I try to let the note become a plain door: open, sit, notice body and breath, let the mind settle as it can.
How do you keep a practice note from turning into a rule? Do you use one, and what does it say? Would you prefer no note at all?
A gentle suggestion: before sitting, ask, “Can this word stay just a word?” Then let the next breath be the answer.
