Last week in my campus sit, I kept turning a little bow into a progress report. I’d lean in, then immediately ask: is this enough? Is it proper? Is my attention on the breath? It felt less like sitting and more like a pop quiz with no answer key.
I’m trying to keep the practice room simple: bow, lamp, pause, breath, loving-kindness. The cues can be a hinge, not a medal. If I can notice a thought about doing it right, that is already the practice showing up.
I’m genuinely curious how others keep it humble. Do you use a short phrase, a gentle check, or just let the cushion hold you? How do you notice when a small cue starts to feel like a test? And can lay practice stay enough without proving it?
I’d love replies from people who lean more ritual, more minimal, more question, more devotion, or more plain sitting. I’m here to listen before I overthink it.
