Friends, I have been sitting with the simple cue of taking refuge, and my mind wants to make it a receipt. I know refuge as turning toward the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, with bodhicitta (awakening mind) as the wish to help others awaken. In the Lamrim (stages of the path), it is not a badge earned; it is a hinge that softens the heart each time we return.
When I notice the urge to stamp the moment with success, I try to ask: what is the next ordinary kindness? A glance at a stranger, a breath before replying, a small act of care. Ngöndro (preliminary practice) trains us to see practice as a way of living, not a shelf of finished things.
I would love to hear how others keep refuge from becoming a score. If you see it differently, please share your view.
