I’ve been sitting a few minutes after breakfast, trying to let the out-breath fence open the room instead of guarding the answer. But the kitchen table still feels like the day’s centre. Is the sit becoming an ordinary moment, or just a quieter room that has taken over?
I keep wanting to call it a hinge, not a badge. That sounds nice, but in practice I get a little proud when I remember to sit. What do you do when the practice starts to feel like a small achievement? Do you add more sitting, more loving-kindness, more terms, so it feels real? I’m not sure if longer quiet sits would help the table lose its privilege, or if they would only make the cushion a special place.
Would it be enough if the sit simply stopped being the centre, even if the kitchen still matters? I’d like to hear from people who think the teaching should make the whole day looser, and from people who think a more formal routine is needed first.
