Can a cue stay useful without becoming a score?

I keep a small cue for attention, but the mind wants a score. If I note a sit as 'better', the cue becomes a report. If I leave it unscored, the mind may drift into vague satisfaction. What would a plain marker look like in practice? Not a badge, not a map, just a hinge?

In the early texts, sati seems less like a metric and more like a way of knowing where things are, moment to moment. I can work with that without adding a story. But I am curious when a cue crosses into belief, and when it stays practical. Would you call a small note a practice aid, a habit, or a subtle claim? I would like examples from your own sits, walks, or loving-kindness practice, especially where the mind wanted a label and how you kept the practice small. No grand map needed, just what worked.
