I wonder where a memory can help without hardening into a fixed idea. When I recall a sentence from the Buddha’s teaching, it can point me back to the breath, to kindness, to patience with myself. Yet the mind can polish that memory into a badge, a possession, a way to seem more settled than I am. In that case the helpful image becomes a small monument, and practice starts to orbit the monument rather than the present moment.
I am not sure how to keep a memory warm without making it stiff. Can a remembered teaching stay like a lamp, bright enough to guide the next step, while still being set down? Or does every remembered line become a map, and the map must be put aside before the path can be walked? I would be glad to hear how others notice a useful memory slipping into an object, and what they do when that happens.
