I’ve been sitting with a very small loving-kindness practice for a few weeks, and I’m still a bit lost on what it is supposed to do. I thought it was about sending warmth to myself, family, a neighbour, then all beings, but in my quiet office corner it often turns into a wish list: I hope everyone is okay, please don’t be difficult, maybe I can be less tired.
When I check the Suttas, the Buddha seems to describe loving-kindness as a broad, open, non-harming attitude, not a transaction. That helps. But I’m not sure where that leaves a beginner. Is it enough to just sit with a simple phrase like “may I be safe,” even if the mind drifts? Do we need a group setting to keep it from becoming self-improvement? And can it be practiced without believing in rebirth, as a way of training kindness in ordinary life?
I’d love to hear how others keep it plain, and where they think it starts to slip into fixing people.
