When I begin a walking round, I sometimes let a short refuge phrase rest in the mind: 'I go to the teaching as a support.' It is not a test. It is a gentle fence.
If the phrase becomes a report, I notice. If the body becomes tense, I soften the step and return to the feet. Sati, awareness, can point to the next action without building a story.
I am curious about those who find a phrase helpful, and those who prefer silence. Does a small wish for kindness, mettā, change the walk? Does it make it warmer, or does it add a task?
I would be glad to hear how others keep practice simple enough for an ordinary walk, and rich enough to carry the Buddha’s teaching.
A small suggestion: choose one word, such as 'kindness,' let it arise once, then walk.
