Can a simple bell stay a cue without a score?
In the teaching days I imagine for myself, a bell meant attention, not achievement. When I first met Buddhist practice, I worried the bell might become a little test: did I hear it clearly? Was I settled enough? The Buddha’s teaching often sounds like a hand on the shoulder, not a report card. A bell can remind us to return, just as a map reminds a walker that the road is there.
I am curious how you keep small aids from hardening. Do you let the bell be a friendly interruption, a pause, a door opened? Does it ever seem like a mark, or a badge, or a gatekeeper? I am trying to hold both views: that ritual can be central to the path, and that a cue is only helpful when it widens the room rather than audits it.
What small practice cue have you found that stays useful without becoming a verdict?
