I’ve been trying a two-line loving-kindness phrase at my desk, between emails and a cup of tea. It goes something like: may I be safe, may I be kind, may the people around me be safe and kind. I’m still learning what mettā means—warm friendliness, perhaps, or a settled wish for ease.
My question is small: can that stay a practice, not just a charm? I keep asking whether it needs a cushion, a little bow, a quiet room, or a group, or if it can work in a kitchen. I like the idea that ritual is central, but I’m nervous about making it a checklist.
If you see ceremony as helpful, what smallest shape keeps it honest? If you think it can work without ceremony, what keeps it from feeling thin? I’d love to hear from people who practice in quiet homes, busy offices, or with a group.
