I’m still figuring out whether a small bow before sitting can stay warm without becoming a test. I like that it can be a doorway: a little pause, a nod to the practice, maybe a quiet way of saying, “I’m here now.” But I worry I’ll turn it into a score—did I bow enough? Was it sincere? Did I do it properly?
I’m especially curious because I’m new, and I’ve never been to a temple. For me, ritual is not decoration; it feels like part of how attention and care get shaped. But I also don’t want it to become performance. If the bow starts feeling like a checklist, what happens to the warmth?
Would you keep the wording plain, or let it change as you learn? And if you practise with a group, does a shared bow make the practice feel more alive, or more formal? I’m open to being corrected.
