A bell rings. The mind reaches for a plan: sit better, fix attention, make the next sit smoother. I set the bell down. The breath is already there. For a few minutes there is no map, only the sound fading, the chair, the cold toe. Then a memory, a thought about tomorrow, a tightening in the jaw. I do not need to make it meaningful. I notice, and let it pass. The point is not to arrive. It is to sit here, with what is, until the next bell.
Where do you go when the practice becomes too smooth, too quiet, too much like a routine? Does the path need a new image, or just a new sit? I’m curious what keeps your practice from turning into a task.
