I’ve been thinking about small practice cues — the way a bell, a breath, a bow, or a thought of the Three Jewels can gently turn attention back. In Lamrim (the stages of the path) we speak of refuge and bodhicitta (the mind that wants all beings to be happy and unburdened) as the heart of practice. A cue can help that heart stay awake, even in a busy Sydney week.
I’m curious: when a cue becomes a test — “Did I remember? Am I sincere?” — does it harden into a score? I’ve found it kinder to let a missed cue be noticed without blame, then return. The cue is not a report card; it is a doorway.
How do you keep reminders warm? Do you use a phrase, a breath, a small gesture, or a visualisation of a teacher? I’m especially interested in views that differ from my own, including those who find ritual less central. Please share gently.
