I try to keep practice small enough to survive a house with two small people in it. This week, the practice cue was a plain bowl of tea before the kids woke. No posture test, no score. I noticed the steam, the heat, the way my mind wanted to jump to the day’s list. That noticing was enough.
What I’m wondering is how to keep sati available without it turning into a checklist: did I remember breathing? Did I remember mettā? Did I bow enough? Ritual helps me, but I want it to stay a doorway, not a badge.
I’d love to hear from people who practice differently: through walking, through work, through a longer sit, through a quieter life. What keeps your attention soft in ordinary moments? And what keeps practice from becoming a performance?
