I’m trying to keep a small pause with my spouse before we rush into the next task. A breath, a nod, maybe a line of mettā. It can feel like a doorway into the day, but sometimes it starts to feel like a checklist: did we do it well? Did we do it enough?
I keep coming back to the Buddha’s teaching about attention: notice what’s happening, then let it be met with kindness. A pause can be a hinge, not a test. If the toddler asks for a biscuit, the practice can be hearing, turning, answering without turning the moment into a report card.
I’d love to hear from others who practise in busy homes. How do you keep a shared pause gentle and practical, without it becoming a performance? What small habit helps you stay open, steady, and a bit amused by the mess?
