Last morning, one child wanted a spoon, the other wanted the spoon to be red. I sat at the kitchen table, then got up and made toast. The practice did not need a big label. It only needed a small turn: notice the spoon, notice the wanting, notice the breath, then return.
I keep wondering if lay practice can stay that plain. The Buddha taught the path in ways that can be carried through a household day, not only in quiet rooms. But when we talk about progress, can a short sit become a scoreboard? Can a cup of tea become proof we are doing it right?
I’m curious how you keep practice small and alive. Does it stay a helper when it becomes a habit? Does it get too neat when it becomes a routine? I’d like to hear from people who think practice needs more structure, and people who think it should stay loose. What does a 'small' practice look like when the kettle is on and someone is asking for help?
