Can a small cue, such as breath plus kindness, keep refuge alive without becoming a test?
In the early texts, refuge seems less like a formal bow than a wholehearted turning toward the Triple Gem. In SN 2.1, the Buddha points to taking refuge as a settled orientation, not a mood we check for. In MN 10, mindfulness is shown as noticing what is present: body, feeling, mind, and mental qualities, without turning the note into a score.
If the cue works, the next action is kinder, slower, more attentive. If it starts producing pride, impatience, or a private audit, it may have become a new object to grasp.
I am curious how others notice this drift. Do you keep refuge in a simple phrase, a pause, a bow, or a quiet intention? And how do you tell that it is still a doorway, not a report? I would value replies that lean on the texts as well as lived practice.
