I’ve been sitting with a simple question from my Lamrim (stages of the path) study: when we practice breath meditation, does a small act of devotion — bowing, taking refuge, remembering the Three Jewels — help the mind stay connected to the path, or does it become a decoration? In my ngöndro (preliminary practice), I find that beginning with refuge and bodhicitta (the awakened heart) gives the breath a direction. It is not a score; it is a doorway.
At the same time, I wonder how a practice that looks plain and secular can keep its ethical heart. If mindfulness is cut away from the Buddha’s teaching, compassion, and community, can it still lead toward wisdom?
I’d love to hear from others: does devotion make your practice more grounded, more formal, or more open? What small cue helps you return to the path without turning the practice into a checklist?
