Can a quiet ritual keep practice from hardening?
I have sat with a small cue for a long time: a soft bow, a brief phrase, a check at the body’s edge. It helps me remember that practice is not only technique. It is a way of meeting people, and the teachings, with care.
Sometimes I worry the cue can become a mark, a way to tell myself I am doing it right. Other times I think it is only a doorway. It does not prove anything. It simply returns attention to the next breath, the next kindness.
I am curious how you keep a practice cue alive without turning it into a test. What small habit helps you notice when care is fading? What does a ritual look like when it is useful, plain, and not a badge?
I would value replies from people who see ritual differently, and from those who prefer very plain sitting. The Buddha’s teaching is broad, and a group’s practice can be broad too.
