I’m curious about the line between a practice cue and a habit. In daily mindfulness, a small cue can help attention return: a breath before a door, a short pause before speaking, a gentle check-in when the mind gets busy. But a cue can also start running by itself, becoming a routine that feels like practice without much awareness.
For me, the test is whether the cue makes the next moment easier to notice, or whether it just fills a gap. If it points outward to care, to the community, or to the Buddha’s teaching, it may stay useful. If it starts feeding a self-image, it may need simplifying.
I’d love to hear how others keep cues light. What do you do when a helpful practice becomes automatic? Does a cue need a pause, a check, or a small reset to stay awake? If you see this differently, I’m interested in the reason behind it.
