Zazen (seated meditation) has a way of making quiet thoughts sound like announcements. I label a thought, then catch myself keeping a count. Noting can be a gentle hand on the mind’s sleeve, or it can become a ledger, checking that every thought was filed.
I like the idea that attention simply returns to the breath, again and again, without keeping a score. But I wonder: if a beginner uses a plain word like “thinking” to know where they are, is that a tool, a tic, or a small teaching? Can the cue stay thin enough to disappear when it has done its work?
I’m interested in different answers. Some sitters may prefer bare awareness, others may find a word useful, and some may not like labels at all. What keeps a cue honest without turning it into a performance?
