I have been sitting with a small question lately. When we practice, how do we know a practice is becoming a proof of something, rather than a way of attending?
In the Thai Forest tradition I have met teachers who spoke of a steady inquiry: Where is the breath? Where is the feeling? Where is the wish to be better? The question is not there to make a case. It is there to keep the mind close to what is present.
Sometimes a practice can turn into a ledger. We count good sits, count kindness, count progress. Then the practice begins to score. I wonder how a beginner can notice that shift without adding another rule.
Maybe the mark is simple: the next act slows, warms, or attends. If the cue becomes a medal, drop it and return to body, step, word.
What small question have you found that keeps practice open, not scored?
