I sit with the breath in the hall, and I notice how easy it is to turn a practice into a list: sit, watch, correct, improve. The Buddha often points to something simpler: know what is present, with care and steadiness. In a small group, a thin cue—placing a hand on the knee, taking one slow breath, saying a short refuge phrase—can bring the mind home. It can also become a way of keeping score.
I am curious how others keep the breath practice open. Do you use a small cue at the start? Do you let the practice be a doorway, or does it become a test? I wonder what helps a beginner stay with the breath without adding too many rules. And what helps a more experienced sitter stay humble, without turning practice into proof?
I would love to hear from people who sit with different traditions, teachers, or temperaments. What has kept your practice gentle, plain, and alive?
